Before we get started though, I need to explain the incoherence that is parking at Hicksville Station. Typically, I'd provide a crude drawing, but today we're more sophisticated. The image below is an MTA map showing Hicksville commuter parking. It is not to scale. If it was, I wouldn't be able to fit Lots #4 and #5 on this blog page.
See the platform? It has LIRR on it, in red. If you look at the tracks east of the station, you will see that the tracks split. The split to the north is toward Huntington, and the split to the east is toward Ronkonkoma. I point this out to demonstrate how two major branches of the Long Island Rail Road converge on Hicksville, making it a major hub and therefore one of the busiest stations in the LIRR system.
This translates into competitive parking each day. You have to be up to the competition. Derek Jeter has to retire from his game at 40, but not me. I'm up for this day in and day out. I come ready to play 162+ every year.
By the way, you have to pay to park in the lots in red. People who don't have a proper permit but want to commute from Hicksville fork over $10 or more per day. Hicksville is THAT desirable.
I have a proper permit, so I can park in any of the non-pay lots. Pretty swanky, rarefied stuff, huh? Well, let me tell you about the parking experience first and you can decide your jealousy factor.
Hicksville lot parking, as it SHOULD be |
No spot? No problem |
Which way should I go? |
Lot #3: Under the Divide. You can see that Lot #3 is in an area nestled between the rail split. The rails are elevated here, so you can take shelter from rain. However, be sure to wear a surgeon's mask to avoid breathing in the pigeon droppings. The underside of those trellises make great places to nest. If you don't watch, you will step in it. There's a lot. Not posting a photo, as I think you get the point.
Got a quarter? |
In the image to the right, I'm the frog circled in yellow, crossing a road of racing vehicles, hoping to get to the train without dying.
Maybe one day they'll give me my very own parking spot, with a sign indicating, "Reserved For The Train In Vain Blogger." I won't need to drive around looking for parking ever again. Of course, nobody will know it's actually my spot, since the sign will be covered in pigeon droppings.

Happy and safe commuting, and may you encounter uncommon sense.

So which is your favorite and where do you normally park?
ReplyDeleteThe parking lot, for certain. Nice and easy, gets me to 8th Avenue subways. I have to make the 7:29 AM train to get parking there, though.
DeleteI believe he meant the Parking Garage.
DeleteWhat about weekend parking? Need a permit? Esp. On Sunday.
ReplyDeleteNo permits needed at Hicksville lots on weekends.
DeleteThanks. Can park in any lot then?
DeleteCheck the signs when you enter the lot. I believe you'll see "permit required Monday to Friday."
DeleteIt's so horrible there. Most days I end up parking a couple of blocks east of the Gregory Museum, along with dozens of other LIRR riders. I have had a couple of instances where angry locals left notes on my car windshield telling me not to park by them. Usually I can find a spot behind Peppercorns on Fridays and certain holidays like Rosh Hoshanah. The situation is really terrible and the Town of Oyster Bay needs to come up with a solution. Maybe they can resurrect parking at Sears behind the auto center with a shuttle bus. It's not like Sears gets enough customers anyway. The parking space back there is unused. Or maybe they can offer shuttle bus service on main roads like Newbridge, Woodbury, etc. to provide an alternative to driving.
ReplyDeleteHey Tommy - I know what you mean. The parking situation is so competitive. I think the Sears lot is a great idea, you can probably park and walk from there but I doubt they'll run shuttles. I don't understand why they didn't rebuild the parking facility with a few more levels. The locals probably didn't want it.
DeleteAs a Hicksville resident AND commuter I would've been thrilled to have a larger parking garage! I live less than 2 miles from the station and unless I get to the garage by 7:20am I'm out of luck. I have no idea why the town wouldn't build bigger when, like you said, it is a major hub. Winter is going to be awful. Better get your Mad Max car armor ready...
ReplyDeleteSo true. I don't understand why they built it small. It's a business district, would another two floors have been a problem? I have no idea. Fortunately, it's expected to be a milder winter than last year. We can hope...

DeleteAt what time do the other lots fill up? I am looking to move to the bethpage area and I work in the city. I don't mind a walk so if lots 4 & 5 don't fill up early then that would be good with me.
ReplyDeleteThank you
You'll be good in lots 4 and 5 up to 7:30 am. By 7:45, the lots start getting full. Fridays tend to be easier and you have another 30 minutes or so before the lots fill.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chuckles. But yeah, somebody should build a multilevel garage.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I don't think any of us will see a long-term parking solution in our lifetime.
DeleteWhats the situation on parking over night? For a week? Everything I can find online makes no mention of this only stating that to park there a permit is required, but i know how bad the parking police are in the area..
ReplyDeleteIt depends on the lot. If you leave your car for a week in the garage facility, I'd imagine you might get towed. Other lots, I'm just not sure. I'd recommend calling the office that issues the parking permit stickers.

ReplyDeleteI would be happy if someone starts a ride sharing service (not taxi service) to Hicksville train station. Charge a flat monthly fee to pickup and drop from train station. This would also reduce the number of cars in the lot and on the roads.
ReplyDeleteWhat is parking like in the garage during winter? Does it fill up earlier and if so, by what time? Current lot 3 user now in the summer but I would hate coming back to a car covered in snow during the winter. I guess people keep shovels in their cars then..
ReplyDeleteOn snowy days the parking garage fills early. Usually though, any time of year I can park there for the 7:29 AM.
ReplyDeleteParking without permit on holidays? Labor day?
ReplyDeleteJust weekdays. You're good on holidays and weekends. Check the signs when you pull into the lot.
DeleteI've just moved near Hicksville around March. I really enjoyed parking in the garage until September. I've noticed parking has been horrible since the start of September. Is it usually like this? Thanks in advance Parking Guru!
ReplyDeleteSummer is easy at the garage. Come September, everyone is back from vacation and it becomes impossible. Monday-Thursday I stay away. Fridays are not bad, though.
DeleteThanks for the very helpful information--far more helpful than the MTA info online. Question: I live somewhere else entirely (Westchester), but want to park at the Hicksville station on a weekday when I have to be in Plainview in very early morning, then again the later afternoon through dinner. I can drive to Hicksville and take the train to Manhattan and back and do my appointments in Plainview on either end. I am willing to pay. Is there pay daily parking or does that fill up too? It would be $50 to park in Manhattan plus 3 hours of torture in the car, so a $20 per day fee is not a problem.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of pay per day parking at Hicksville, but being a resident, I don't pay close attention to how early they fill up. Some of the Facebook group followers may know, come join the group and ask your question there!

What's it like to park there *after* work and then train into the city for evening events and stuff? I'm going to be working in Hicksville soon.
ReplyDeleteEvenings are easy. You get there after 6 pm and you'll have you pick of parking spots.
ReplyDeleteJust moved to Hicksville - I would say I arrived to the station around 6:40? and I was able to park in one of the last spots in #2 - which terrifies me because I felt I was there pretty early!
ReplyDeleteWould you say I would have luck in #1 (garage) around this time? I took a 650 in which was fine to me I guess...
